ownwords is a notebook. What you write in it is yours and stays private until you choose to publish it. This page says exactly what we keep, how it is protected, and why. ownwords is made by Ravora Apps (OPC) Private Limited in Chennai, India.

What we keep

  • Your account. Your name and email address from Google when you sign in. Nothing else from your Google account.
  • Your writing. Drafts, their sections and titles, earlier versions and named drafts, and the pieces you publish, saved as you type so you can continue on another device.
  • Things you bring in. Text you save from the web, and the words transcribed from a voice note or a photographed page. The audio and the photo themselves are read once for transcription and are not stored.
  • Pictures you add to a piece. Stored at a long, unguessable web address so they can show on your page once you publish. Anyone given that exact address can open the picture.
  • Your writing memory. Notes the notebook keeps about your subjects, open threads and how you write, so its questions improve over time. You can see and clear this on your Memory page, and switch it off for any piece.
  • Your account’s activity. When you signed in, published, connected an account or took a copy of everything, with the kind of browser and a scrambled form of the network it came from (never the address itself), so you can see it in Settings and we can warn you about a sign-in that isn’t yours.
  • Notes you send us. What you write in the feedback box on Home, with your name and email, so we can read it and reply. It is not sealed like your writing, since it is written to us; it goes when your account does.
  • Usage. Timestamps, what the notebook asked and whether it helped, and the cost of each AI call, so we can keep the product honest and affordable. Counts, never your words. No advertising trackers, no third-party analytics.

How your writing is protected

Everything you write here is encrypted with a key of your own before it is stored (AES-256-GCM): your drafts and their titles, every earlier version, your saved lines, what the notebook remembers about your writing, your edits on the Desk, and the index that lets the notebook find your earlier passages. Your key is itself locked with a master key kept apart from the database, so a copy of the database alone reveals none of your words.

Each value is sealed for one place and one account: moved to another row or another account, it does not open. When you delete your account your key is destroyed first, so your words can no longer be read from any copy of the database, backups included.

This protects your words where they are stored; it is not end-to-end encryption. ownwords’ servers open them to show them to you, save your changes, and send the parts you ask about to the AI services below. Nobody at ownwords reads your drafts; if you ask us to help with a problem, we will ask before looking.

Not sealed with your key: the pieces you publish (they are public), your page’s name, handle, bio, links and picture, your account’s name and email, dates, word counts, and usage counts.

Your account’s safety

You sign in with Google, so your Google account’s protections, two-step verification included, guard ownwords too. Settings shows where you are signed in and your account’s recent activity, and signs you out everywhere else at once. When your account is opened from a browser and network it hasn’t used lately, we email you.

Connected accounts

You can connect Bluesky, LinkedIn, X, Threads, a Facebook Page you run or an Instagram professional account so that Share everywhere can post a piece you published. You sign in on that network’s own page; ownwords never sees your password. We keep the account’s name, handle and picture (for Facebook, the Page’s), and an access token stored encrypted, used only to post what you choose to share, when you press Share. We never read your feed, messages or followers, and never post on our own.

Disconnect any account on the Connections page and its token is deleted at once; where the network allows, we also ask it to revoke the access. If you remove ownwords from the network itself (for Threads and Instagram, under Settings, Website permissions; for Facebook, under Settings, Business integrations), the network tells us and we delete the connection.

What we never do

  • We never write for you, and we never show your private writing to anyone.
  • We never sell or share your data, and we never use it to train AI models.
  • We never read your drafts ourselves, except if you ask us to help with a problem, and then only with your say-so.

AI processing

To ask you a question, transcribe a note, or review grammar, the relevant text, audio or image is sent to Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini) under their business terms, which do not allow them to train on it. They process it to answer and do not keep it as part of your account with us.

While you speak on a computer, the words that appear live come from your browser’s own speech recognition: on your device where the browser can, otherwise your browser’s speech service (Google’s in Chrome, Apple’s in Safari). They are only a preview; the words kept are the ones transcribed as above.

Email

We email you about your account (a sign-in we haven’t seen, for one) and, only if you turn it on in Settings, the daily line: a line of your own writing that you left open, to pick up from. Email is less private than ownwords itself, so leave the daily line off if that matters to you.

Who else handles it

  • Vercel runs the app and stores the pictures you add.
  • Neon hosts the database, with your writing sealed as above.
  • Upstash keeps short-lived counters, caches and a log of events, with no words of yours in them.
  • Anthropic and Google process what you ask the notebook about; Google also signs you in.
  • Resend sends our emails.
  • The networks you connect receive only what you choose to share there.

All of them encrypt data in transit and at rest. The database host keeps backups for a limited time, to recover from a fault; a deleted account’s words cannot be read from them.

Publishing

When you publish a piece, that piece and your page name become public at ownwords.page/your-handle. Everything else stays private. You can unpublish at any time; its address stops working at once. Posts you shared to other networks stay there until you delete them on those networks.

Cookies

One cookie keeps you signed in. Your browser also remembers small preferences such as the theme and the keystroke sound. No tracking cookies.

Your choices

  • Copy any piece out as formatted text, Markdown or PDF at any time, or take everything home from Settings: every piece, diary day and saved line as Markdown, in one .zip.
  • Clear your writing memory from the Memory page.
  • Disconnect any connected account on the Connections page; its token is deleted at once.
  • Delete your account yourself in Settings, under Privacy and security: everything in it is deleted at once, and your key with it. Or write to hello@ownwords.page and we will do it within 7 days and confirm by email.
